Abstract. The paper examines the optimization of ventilation of large welding workshops for effective control of welding aerosol. The inhaled particles formed during welding remain suspended for a long time, posing a serious threat to the health of workers. Traditional general exchange ventilation systems in such conditions are characterized by high energy consumption, low efficiency and inability to cover distributed welding stations, while they are insufficient to achieve regulatory targets and additional local dust collection devices or other auxiliary technical measures are required. Based on numerical simulation using the CFD method, three schemes for the organization of air exchange have been developed and compared (the scheme "supply from above-exhaust from below"; with a fixed flow direction; with a time-varying flow direction) in terms of smoke dispersion, the structure of air flows and the distribution of concentrations of pollutants. The results can serve as a basis for designing and optimizing ventilation systems in large welding workshops.
