Abstract. The production of Portland cement is one of the main sources of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. To reduce the environmental burden and increase the use of industrial by-products, an assessment was made of the possibility of obtaining geopolymer binders based on ground granular blast furnace slag and fly ash using soda ash and its melt as alkaline activators. It has been established that the type and amount of activator, as well as the composition of precursors, significantly affect the strength characteristics. It is shown that a 2-fold increase in the proportion of liquid glass can increase the strength of the binder up to 6 times, and an increase in the fly ash content above 60% leads to a decrease in strength. The principal possibility of using soda ash as an effective and cheaper alkaline activator for geopolymer binders has been proved. The obtained compositions demonstrate strength corresponding to the concrete class B20, which confirms the potential of their use in construction.
