Abstract. The transition to 24-year service life of motorways requires a comprehensive modernisation of the main approaches to their condition management, in particular diagnostics necessary for making effective decisions on the timing and type of repair measures. This paper presents the results of research on the condition of road pavements of public roads with the use of dynamic loading unit with falling load, which allows to carry out layer-by-layer determination of elastic moduli of materials of structural layers of road pavements, and to register the value of dissipation of deformation energy under impact. The damage index similar to the Park-Eng damage index was calculated on the basis of the tests. The adequacy of the obtained values on two sections of the exploited motorways in normative and non-normative condition is evaluated. Using the proposed approach, the condition of different sections of the federal motorway has been assessed and recommendations on the assignment of works on maintenance, repair and overhaul of motorways depending on the damage index have been proposed. It is shown that the main difference of this index depending on the existing criteria for assessing the condition of motorway pavements is the possibility to take into account the actual dissipation of deformation energy.
