Abstract. The issues of the influence of microdefects remaining on the surface of the lower layer of the coating and the base after repair work on the strength of the pavement according to the criteria of stretching during bending and resistance to rutting are considered. The experience of designing and operating road surfaces is summarized, taking into account the influence of natural and man-made factors on the wear resistance and maintainability of coatings. Two series of tests were performed in accordance with the standard methodology to determine the index of flexural tensile strength and resistance to rutting. For testing using a roller sealer, a series of samples were made of asphalt concrete slabs. Each series consisted of control samples and samples with simulated cracks in the lower layer of the coating. Tests on the criterion of flexural tensile strength were carried out for the winter and spring-summer periods, and tests for resistance to rutting were carried out for the summer period. It was found that the presence of cracks in the lower layers of the coating and the base leads to a decrease in flexural tensile strength, and the resistance to rutting in samples with a crack in the lower layer of the coating decreases only after the appearance of a crack on the surface of the coating. It has been established that during repair work it is unacceptable to leave cracks, sealed and not sealed, in the lower layers of the coating and the base, and fragmentary restoration of the coating by replacing it is only a temporary measure with extremely low long-term effectiveness.
