Abstract. The calculation of the bases for the second group of limit states is mandatory when designing objects. In practice, the calculation of foundation sediments is performed based on the model of a linearly deformable half-space according to the scheme of a linearly deformable layer. One of the problematic areas of this technique is the increase in the precipitation of the base with an increase in the considered depth of the soil mass. To obtain the values of the precipitation of buildings, an empirical parameter is used here - the depth of the compressible thickness of the base (calculated area). According to the norms, deformations of the soil column below this zone can be neglected. The effectiveness of numerical modeling depends on the correctness of the assignment of boundary conditions, in particular, the size of the computational domain. It is shown that determining the size of this area based on calculating the depth of the compressible thickness using an empirical method is not correct enough. The values of the zone of characteristic inflection of the graph of the influence of the depth of the calculated area on the amount of precipitation are revealed. When assigning a design area less than the specified range, the value of the foundation precipitation will be underestimated. In the future, clarifications are required in the regulatory documents regulating the calculation of building sediments and imposing requirements for engineering surveys representing the initial data for such calculations.
