Abstract. An overview of the work of domestic and foreign researchers in the field of the use of glass structures as load-bearing elements of buildings is given. Based on the analysis of the results of experimental and theoretical studies, data on the physical and mechanical characteristics of glass necessary for the design of bearing structures are presented. It is noted that currently there are two methods for determining and assigning strength and deformation characteristics of glass: based on experimental studies and improving the chemical composition and technology of glass manufacture. It is pointed out that it is necessary to create regulatory documents in the field of designing glass structures and clarify the strength and stiffness characteristics of glass accepted in the current norms for multilayer structures. It is noted that the strength and deformation parameters of glass accepted in the norms for multilayer glass structures relate to a specific manufacturer and therefore cannot be used in the mass design of load-bearing and enclosing structures. Experimental studies of bendable laminated glass beam structures on the effect of short-term and long-term loads are described. Recommendations are given for the calculation of load-bearing structures made of glass, taking into account the application of methods adopted in domestic and foreign standards and the studies of domestic specialists.
