Abstract. Underground linear structures include railway and road tunnels, metro tunnels, hydro-technical and municipal urban tunnels, including water supply tunnels, pedestrian tunnels in cities, as well as underground facilities for special purposes. The dates of construction of such underground facilities in our country and, accordingly, their service lives are shown. The normative service lives for the relevant structures are given. Using examples of specific objects built in the 1930s and later, defects and damage to subway tunnels and Crimean railway tunnels built in the 19th century were revealed. In addition to the given defects and damages and on their basis, the parameters determining the physical deterioration of underground linear structures are revealed. On the example of the Severo-Muysk railway tunnel of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, the methods of defect elimination of the mentioned tunnel are disclosed. Similar results were obtained during the inspection of approach excavations for the construction of previously mothballed Moscow Metro stations, mainly located in water-bearing low-strength, fractured, cavernous limestone. The same applies to the Vladivostok Tunnel and other tunnels of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. In general, a rather complete general picture of defects was formed, which made it possible to conclude that the category of technical condition of underground transport structures is primarily determined not by the year of construction, but by the quality of design and survey and construction works, adopted design solutions, as well as operating conditions. The absence of normative base for design and production of repair and restoration works was noted. In order to fill it, the corresponding standard of the organisation has been developed.
