Abstract. The paper considers two directions for improving the method of calculating building structures. The first direction is to expand the boundaries of the criteria for limiting conditions in the design of buildings and structures, taking into account unlikely short-term emergency loads (explosions, transport strikes, falling cargo, earthquake, tsunami, avalanches, mudslides, etc.) within the so-called special limit state, which is allowed by current regulatory documents. A special limiting state occurs after exceeding the boundary criteria of the calculated load-bearing capacity for the first group of limiting states, allows the development of large plastic deformations and partial destruction of sections, but does not lead to the collapse of buildings. Accounting for this limiting state gives the greatest effect in repeatedly statically indeterminate structural systems. The failure of load-bearing vertical structures with different arrangements in terms of plan and height can lead to an unequal risk of destruction of adjacent structures. Therefore, another direction of improving the method of limit states is the introduction of differentiated accounting of the level of responsibility of the load-bearing elements of buildings and structures. The level of responsibility of a building is determined by the amount of economic, social and environmental damage caused by its collapse, and is currently taken into account when performing calculations using the limit state method with the help of the liability safety factor. The authors conducted numerical experiments on the example of alternate removal of columns, which are the "key" elements of monolithic reinforced concrete frames of buildings. The experiments confirmed the validity of introducing different values of reliability coefficients for responsibility, depending on the location of the columns in plan and height, and made it possible to formulate proposals on the methodology for determining the differentiated level of responsibility of individual structural elements.
