Abstract. The paper is devoted to the harmonization of the requirements of contemporary standards on mechanical safety of structures and provisions of national and international regulations on protection of cultural heritage objects. The incorrectness of the literal extension of the requirements of the norms intended for new construction to architectural monuments is noted, which can lead to the loss of authenticity of historical structures. The redundancy of the concept of reliability adopted in general construction standards is demonstrated in relation to objects of architectural heritage, which, by the very fact of their existence for more than a century, have proved the reliability of the decisions made, the adequacy of materials and structures to the acting loads and impacts. It seems appropriate to prefer measures that allow the monument to be preserved in a limited working state. The concept of ensuring mechanical safety is proposed, which, without contradicting the concept of reliability accepted in the norms, encourages a careful attitude towards objects of architectural heritage and obliges to resort to a modern invasion into the material of the monument (to strengthen structures) only in case of a carefully justified need, when other methods have been exhausted. The algorithm of decision-making on reinforcement of structures of an architectural monument is based on the search of possible effective loads for elements of monument structure which are admissible both in terms of adaptation of a building to the new function and provision of mechanical safety.
