Abstract. The article considers the influence of the gas phase on the parameters of the consolidation of water-saturated clay soils. The results of experimental studies have shown that the change in the phase composition affects the determination of soil consolidation coefficients in different ways. However, in all cases, an increase in the gas phase content led to a decrease in the compressibility of the samples. The authors of the article explain this effect by the impact of gas bubbles on the process of soil deformation. As a classification criterion for the water-saturated state of clay soils, a range of the degree of humidity is set, where the change in the compressibility of the sample is linear. A method of conducting consolidation tests with preliminary restoration of the phase composition of samples is proposed. This will increase the reliability of determining the parameters of soil consolidation and the reliability of the forecast of settlement of buildings and structures over time. In the future, this test method may be recommended as a new standard or included as a separate section in the current standard.
