Abstract. Some peculiarities and problems, that arise when determining and assessing the strength of mortars and fine-grained concretes in structures, in particular for non-standard situations when traditional test methods are not applicable, are considered. The issues of establishing transition coefficients from mortar strength in structural specimens to mortar strength in standard molded specimens are touched upon. The influence of scale and transient factors on the results of tests on specimens has been established. The results of experimental approbation of alternative ways of testing fine-grained concretes and mortars in specimens of small dimensions, non-standard shapes and test schemes, which can be used at production quality control and also at technical examinations of structures and products, including the thin-walled and thin-layered ones, are presented. A comparative assessment of different methods of non-destructive testing in relation to non-standard test cases, taking into account the features of different types of structures, was made. Proposals have been formulated for measures to optimize the system of standardization of grade strength and methods of conformity assessment in molded samples at the stage of production control as well as in structures under construction.
