Abstract. The causes and mechanisms of accidents leading to the progressive collapse of building structures are considered. The contradictions between the requirements of various regulatory documents on the problem of progressive collapse are revealed. It is shown that the prevention of progressive collapse cannot be solved in the same way for all types of objects. Preventive measures are proposed to ensure the resistance of structures to progressive collapse without conditional calculations with the exclusion of key elements from the work. It is shown on concrete examples of projects that this problem cannot be solved by universal methods. The necessity to develop a system of clear regulatory documentation (codes of rules and recommendations) on the issue of accounting for progressive collapse for various types of buildings and structures is revealed.
Key words: progressive collapse, failures of building structures, regulatory documents, preventive measures.
