Abstract. The actual issues of expanding the field of application of shallow foundations for high-rise buildings are considered. Traditional foundations are not always effective on construction sites composed of medium and strongly deformable soils, thus, under certain conditions thin-walled strip-shell foundations can be used for cost reduction of the zero cycle. In order to determine the actual mechanisms of interaction of the soil with a high-rise building erected on TSSF and compare these mechanisms with the estimated forecast, it is needed to conduct geotechnical monitoring during construction period and at commencement of building operation. The paper describes the geotechnical monitoring program of the residential building built on thin-walled strip-shell foundations which is an alternative type of foundation as compared to traditional shallow foundations. Calculated simulation of interaction of the building with soil is presented. Data of the calculated simulation show the rationality of the use of foundations with a curvilinear convex upwards contact surface. The increased stiffness of the soil bed is caused by additional side squeezing of soil due to the specific features of the contact surface shape. The efficiency of thin-walled strip-shell foundations concerning material consumption and cost in comparison with pile-slab foundations is shown. The comparison of monitoring data with the results of numerical simulation of the interaction between the base and the structure is made.
Key words: strip thin-wall shell foundations, ground base, geotechnical monitoring, numerical calculation.
